About Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a common, silent and progressive eye disease that is highly common among the elderly population and affects as many as two million Americans a year, some of them with no knowledge of the condition.

Causes of glaucoma are multi-factorial.  Glaucoma is more common in people with high eye pressures, or those whom have a family history of glaucoma, but you can also be at increased risk if you have increased optic nerve ratios or thinner corneas.  Sadly, it can also occur in people with normal eye pressures and no risk factors at all, which makes yearly routine eye examinations so important in detecting this silent disease. Other findings that are assessed are visual field analysis and optic nerve imaging.

Although we don't currently have a cure for glaucoma, there are several treatment options available at ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD to help you maintain your vision for years to come.
